At last some action
After his rather flawed attempt at positioning himself as the next Labour Leader, you would have thought that David Miliband would have been told to keep his mouth shut and get on with his job. Instead what we found was that Miliband either chose, or was more likely told, to go to ground and say nothing about anything. But that unfortunately happened, and the result of that is that our government, and our foreign minister completely missed the boat over the whole georgian crisis.
In fact it does seem a little paranoid by Gordon Brown that he, and he only should be the one to make any comment whatsoever on government policy. Maybe that is the way that Gordon is protecting his position by only personally vetting all interviews? It's a possibility.
Anyway, back to the point about Miliband. The Georgia crisis began on 7th August, nearly three weeks ago, and today is the first time that I can recall Miliband passing comment on the issue. He hasn't even visited Georgia, unlike David Cameron. Cameron could see the problem and he went, even though it's well outside of his remit of opposition leader. David Miliband on the other has waited nearly three weeks until all of the shelling has ceased and will visit, not Georgia, but the Ukraine. Not exactly what I would say is the most obvious location in the whole crisis.
So what are the government doing. A major international crisis, and our foreign minister has either been gagged by the PM, or too scared to comment about it in case his comments are misconstrued as a leadership bid. Also why no visit to Georgia, or has that been banned as well in case it is seen as an attempt to make himself look like an international statesman. David Cameron has scored an amazing coup on this issue, because of the government's inaction he was out there first. As for David Miliband, at least he is doing something at last
