Anti-Americanism
In David Cameron's speech today, setting out his view of foreign policy, he will warn against anti-US sentiments. He is expected to call anti-Americanism "intellectual and moral surrender" and "complacent cowardice".
Now, I read about this on the way in to work this morning, and what crossed my mind is where did these sentiments originate from, is it really anti-Americanism, or is it anti-Bush, or does it go even further than that.
At the moment Bush is bearing the brunt of the anti-US feeling, mainly based on the Iraq war but surely it cannot be all down to one man. After all, he had only been president for eight months when the Twin Towers was attacked. Al Qaeda had "justified" that attack (as if anyone could justify such an atrocity) because of US foreign policy, but their first known attack was back in 1993 on the Twin Towers, when Clinton was President. But then he had only been in charge, like Bush, for only a few months.
So, it must go further to Bush Senior for the first Iraq war, or even Raegan who cut off funding for the Mudjahadin once the USSR left Afghanistan. Maybe even Johnson or Nixon for Vietnam, or Trueman for being the only man to authorise the use of a nuclear weapon at the end of the second world war.
Just how far back do we need to look for the beginning of anti-Americanism, or as I believe (IMHO) should we look to the future to find a way of ending that feeling.
So, is this anti-Americanism really just anti-Bush , or is it deeper than that?

i think anti-americanism originates from our awareness of the fact that we owe them so much; its like with personal relationships: we cant help hating people that have done a lot (too much?) for you
I think there are several negative stereotypes of Americans, which extremists often exploit to manipulate others, and these should be challenged. Many Americans are good, forward-looking people who we can learn from; however I do not believe we should religiously follow in their shadow either.
Despite the War in Iraq and Bush, I still believe the British population overall feels closer to America than Europe.
